The MikroSim project

A geographically explicit micro model for simulation of the spread of influenza (pandemic and interpandemic) in Sweden is being implemented. The purpose of the model is to test and evaluate the effectivity of different policymeasures like vaccination, treatment with antiviral pharmaceuticals, contact tracing, closing of schools and day-care centers etc.

The model was developed in C++, originally for smallpox, and simulates a number of disease carriers, updating daily the status for all individuals in the country. The model uses anonymized but real data for all Swedes where family relations, workplaces and geographical coordinates are included. The process can be visualized on a map.
